Natural Gas Furnace Maintenance

If you already own a natural gas furnace you would have experienced the economics of running it and the convenience of operation it offers. In all probability these two factors prompted you to decide in its favor. It offers considerable savings as compared to other systems of heating and that includes electric heaters also. While it heats water quickly, it also offers you a dependable system for keeping the house warm.

Like any other equipment, a natural gas furnace too requires proper care and routine maintenance to continue to provide you with the expected services. Should you continue to be negligent on that score, you would feel let down by the equipment when you need it the most. Regular check-ups, which don’t really take too much of your time will make it last longer, and thus continue to give you the desired level of service. Here are a few helpful hints to enable you to get the best out of it.

You should replace its air filter at least once in two months. In case you are required to operate it daily, you would better change it every month. You can perhaps imagine the consequences of a blocked filter. A blocked filter restricts the flow of air. Consequently you will not get the desired amount of warm air. This causes the machine to work harder for offering the same amount of heat. This means that its consumption of gas goes up and you’ll get inflated heating bills. Apparently the cost of changing filters looks high, but ultimately it works out lower than the cost of additional fuel you’ll be burning because of having clogged filters.

Likewise a periodical check of heating ducts for any kind of blockages will be helpful to have its optimum operation. Removing all such blockages will facilitate airflow. It is not desirable to place any piece of furniture just in front of the air outlet. This also restricts free flow of air, thus making the furnace to work harder.

People often employ a duct tape to close all the seams on the ductwork of the furnace to have a better effect. While it is desirable to close all such ducts, a duct tape is not a very appropriate means of doing it for it gets dried up because of the continuous flow of heat and finally curls up to give a very untidy look to the whole place. An aluminum foil is a better option. Though a bit more expensive, it effectively seals the desired points and lasts longer.

These small steps that are hardly time consuming, if regularly followed, would go a long way in increasing the efficiency of your system while it continues to give you the much desired service and saves you from a major breakdown that would cause a lot of inconvenience and additional expense. It shouldn’t be too much of an exercise to keep you warm in cold weather.
